Frequently Asked Questions

+ How does the Mailnox mailbox work?

Simply tap your NFC on the top indicator of the mailbox with your card to unlock. It's fast, secure, and weatherproof.

+ Who can get Mailnox?

Anyone with a rural address in New Zealand

+ How secure is Mailnox?

Mailnox is built from durable polyethylene plastic, designed to withstand tough NZ rural conditions and deter casual theft. Like a locked car, no system can guarantee 100% protection — but a secure mailbox is often enough to make opportunists move on.

We’ve focused on rural delivery because of the community spirit rural areas are known for. Around here, if someone’s lingering around letterboxes, neighbours tend to notice — and opportunistic thieves don't like attention. Mailnox is built strong, simple, and community-backed — exactly what rural delivery needs.

+ What if I lose my card?

You can order replacement cards from us anytime for $10 each.

+ How long does the battery last?

Over 12 months with normal use. We use Energizer lithium batteries for reliability.

+ Who else can access my Mailnox?

Your local postie has a secure master card for mail delivery access.

+ How does the postie access my Mailnox?

Rural posties are issued a master NFC card that securely opens Mailnox boxes in their delivery area.

+ Does my NFC card open other people's Mailnox mailboxes?

No. Each card is uniquely encrypted to your mailbox. The chance of two cards having the same ID is about 1 in 4.3 billion.

+ What happens if the battery dies?

The mailbox will remain unlocked if the battery goes flat. Batteries are easy to replace by unclipping the latch.

+ What tools do I need to install it?

Bugle screws are recommended for fixing the bracket to the post, and an Allen key (included) to attach the mailbox to the bracket.

+ Is Mailnox waterproof?

The mailbox is water-resistant with raised channels to prevent pooling water from reaching your parcels.

+ Can I order extra NFC cards?

Yes. Additional cards can be ordered at any time for $10 each.

+ Does Mailnox come with a warranty?

Yes. Every Mailnox comes with a standard 12-month warranty covering manufacturing defects and lock malfunctions (excluding battery life, pest damage, or misuse).

You can also purchase an Extended 5-Year Warranty for $50, which covers up to 3 lock replacements and offers a depreciated refund if a fourth failure occurs.

To stay covered, you’ll need to submit a maintenance log every 6–12 months via our Maintenance Log page.

Read the full policy on our Extended Warranty page.

+ Is there a mobile app for the Mailnox?

No app is available at this stage. Access is by NFC card tap only.

+ Can I use the Mailnox at a commercial or residential property?

Yes — as long as you are on a rural delivery route, it works for residential and commercial properties.

+ What if I move house?

Your Mailnox is coded for the specific rural address provided at purchase. If you move locally on the same rural run, you can take it with you. If you move outside your original delivery area, you'll need to purchase a new Mailnox to match the new location. Contact us and we'll sort you out with the latest version.

+ When will my order ship?

4-6 week lead time. You will recieve communication from us when your shifts on the move.

+ Can I still send mail from my rural mailbox using the flag?

Absolutely. With Mailnox, you can raise the flag just like you always have — letting your postie know there’s outgoing mail to collect.

The difference is, now you can rest easy knowing your outgoing mail is protected inside a locked box until pickup, not sitting out where sticky hands might have a crack. Mailnox helps bring trust back into the rural post service — the way it should be.

+ What are the dimemsions?

The actual dimensions of Mailnox are: 340mm wide x 440mm deep x 250mm high
